How To Choose The Right Face Wash Based On Your Skin Type

How To Choose The Right Face Wash Based On Your Skin Type

Who doesn't want smooth blemish-free skin? But due to our hormones, environment, diet, lifestyle, etc. we struggle to maintain our skin's health and glow. That is where the custom skincare routine comes into action!

You must be aware that the first step to any skincare routine is cleaning. Cleaning your face washes away dirt, makeup, dead skin cells, excess sebum, or anything else that might be clogging your pores or making your skin look dull.

Face wash or cleansers are available in sheer numbers and with so many options, it is natural to get confused on which one to buy.

What do you look for when you buy a face wash? Its ingredients, or its targeted concerns, or for what skin type it is suitable?

Let us walk you through a proper guide in choosing the right face wash based on your skin type

Why is face wash necessary?

Why is face wash necessary

Face wash cleans and hydrates your skin, and clean skin is a good base to carry out other skincare treatments. It is quite important for the face to be clean and pores to be unclogged so that facial therapy products or other products in your skincare routine can enter different layers of the skin.

When you clean your face, the massaging motions activate the blood circulation in the face and bring a fresh glow to the skin. You can also address skin conditions like acne, dark spots, and pigmentation based on the types of cleanser you are using.

Using a face wash that is too harsh can cause dryness, and using one that's too rich in active ingredients could trigger oiliness and breakouts. So it is critically important to know your skin type.

How to choose face wash based on your skin type?

Typically there are 5 skin types: Normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive. Identify what your skin type is.

Face wash for normal skin:

Since normal skin is well balanced: neither too dry, nor too oily, and not prone to acne, blemishes, and environmental sensitivities, you can choose any face wash that feels right on and for your skin. However, try to avoid ingredients like paraben, fragrance, sulphates, and other harmful ingredients.

Face wash for dry skin:

As dry skin is already short of hydration, a gentle cleanser that will clear away grime and impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils must be considered. Look for a face wash that is hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, chemical-free, or alcohol-free and has a non-foaming formula. A hydrating cleanser made with glycerin or essential oils should be more suitable.

If your face feels tight and dry after using the face wash, then it is a sign to change your cleansing products. Try to avoid antibacterial soaps and cleansers with exfoliators such as glycolic or salicylic acid, as they can dry out your skin. Face cleansers rich in lactic acid, ceramides, almond oil, and oat milk are recommended. Also, avoid washing your face with hot water as it might worsen the dryness.

Face wash for oily skin:

Look for an oil-control face wash that digs deep to purify pores and helps balance oil production without leaving your face feeling dry. In your face wash look for ingredients like AHA, BHA, niacinamide, charcoal, retinol, and clay.

For oily skin types, the ideal way to get rid of extra sebum is by using a double cleansing method: first an oil-based cleaner followed by a water-based cleanser. If you have acne-prone skin, it is advised to use a cleanser with salicylic acid in it, as it will unclog the pores and get rid of excess oil.

Face wash for combination skin:

Combination skin requires a well-balanced product as certain parts of the skin are dry, while the T-zone is oily. For this skin type,  a mild, gel-based face wash is recommended that will cleanse the face without drying it. A formula that will balance both: thorough cleaning with a healthy dose of hydration. A cleanser that will protect the skin's lipid barrier, lock in natural moisture, and clean surface oil.

Opt for a face wash that is hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, paraben-free, and soap-free, that won't irritate your skin. Look for ingredients like aloe vera, tea tree oil, and vitamin C. You can also go for micellar water as it cleanses the skin of oil & dirt and supplies hydration to it.

Face wash for sensitive skin:

If you have sensitive skin then cleansers with dense, creamy foams, and soothing ingredients like aloe vera, witch hazel, and willow bark. When the skin's pH is away from normal, the skin can get dry or irritated. So balancing the skin's pH is also important. Use super mild cleansers and avoid those with fragrance, paraben, essential oils, alcohol, harsh chemicals, and exfoliants. You can also opt for micellar water.
