Too Many Open Pores Causing Skin Problems? Learn How To Treat Them

Sliding your hand on your face and noticing that the texture of your skin is abrupt?!?!?

That means there are too many open pores.

Open pores are a problem for many as they are visible and can make them dislike their presence. The pores on our skin allow it to breathe by releasing the natural oil called sebum onto the surface. The term 'open pores' to natural skin pores that have become enlarged and more noticeable. Large pores often appear in the areas that have a higher density of sebaceous glands i.e: T-Zone. Open pores affect the skin's texture to become an aesthetic concern, especially for people with oily or combination skin.

Causes of open pores:

Excessive sebum production: When the sebaceous gland produces excess oil causing the skin to appear shiny and oily.

Decreased elasticity: When the skin becomes less supple.

Increased hair follicle volume: When the pore at the end of the hair follicle gets clogged.

Sun exposure: Sun exposure over time can cause severe damage to the skin. It can affect collagen production and the elasticity of the skin, thus contributing to large open pores.

Aging: As you age, your skin loses its elasticity, and collagen production is also decreased, causing the appearance of pores even more.

Chronic Acne: If you have acne-prone skin, the pores can easily get clogged and cause blackheads and whiteheads. Moreover, inflammatory acne weakens sebum glands and follicular openings thus enlarging the pores.

Heredity Factor: Genetic predisposition and ethnicity are significant factors that cause large and more open pores.

Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations stimulate the hyperactivity of sebaceous glands thus triggering the production of excessive sebum, which then results in large open pores.

Ways to treat/minimize large open pores:

Cleanse your face twice a day

Cleanse your face twice a day

This is the basic step of any skincare routine. Wash your face twice a day  or more if you are sweating a lot or are involved in any sports activities. Use a cleanser that is non-abrasive and doesn't contain alcohol. Cleansing can help wash away oil and dirt from the pores, thus making the pores less visible.

Choose water-based products

It is recommended to use water-based products. As oil-based skincare or cosmetics products contain petroleum, coconut oil, and other kinds of oil. They surely moisturize the skin but may not be suitable for people with oily skin type and large pores. The excess oil that collects on the skin can make pores appear even larger.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation

If you have oily skin you must exfoliate at least twice a week to remove dirt, dead skin cells, or excess oil that can clog your pores. You can look for exfoliating agents that have beta hydroxy acids such as salicylic acid or polyhydroxy acids, such as lactobionic acid and gluconolactone.

Moisturize daily

It might seem counterintuitive to moisturize oily skin. However, an oil-free moisturizer can help reduce the size of the pores. Moisturizers help hydrate and soften the skin. This allows the oil from the sebaceous glands to penetrate more deeply into the layers of the skin, rather than accumulating in the pores. Thus moisturizing prevents pores from getting clogged with oil, hence reducing their appearances.

Apply clay masks

Since clay absorbs sebum, using a clay-based face mask once or twice a week can help remove additional oil clogging the pores. Removing that extra oil can help prevent pores from becoming enlarged and it also makes them less visible.

However, it is advised to apply a clay mask on a different day than exfoliating. Over-treating your skin with different products on the same day can cause irritation. Skin irritation then, in turn, can cause pores to appear enlarged.

Always remove makeup before bed

It is very important that you remove your makeup before hitting the bed at night. Sleeping in makeup overnight can cause the pores to get clogged with makeup, oil, day's dirt, and bacteria. If you feel lazy to remove your whole makeup, micellar water or cleansing wipes might come in handy.

Wear sunscreen daily

Wear sunscreen daily

Wearing SPF daily is a must! Sun exposure can dry the skin and make pores appear larger than usual. Always choose an SPF with 30 or over. Protecting your skin from the sun can make your skin feel supple and smooth. Few ways to win against the sun:

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat
  • Cover your face with a scarf when going outside
  • Wear sunscreen every day (reapply every 2 hours when outside)
  • Stay in the shade when the sun is at its peak

Having large or open pores on the skin is not a health concern but rather it is more of a concern of appearance. Follow the above tips to keep your pores in check and maintain the oil balance of your face.
